Swallowing

Swallowing difficulties, also known as Dysphagia, include any difficulty with sucking, swallowing, drinking, chewing, eating, controlling saliva, taking medication or effectively protecting the lungs from food/drink. Some neurological disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s Disease) or health events (e.g. stroke) may impact the way we swallow.

Regain Safe & Effective Swallowing Abilities

Swallowing difficulties, or dysphagia, can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, affecting their ability to eat, drink, and protect their airway. Dysphagia often results from neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, or other medical issues that impair the coordination of muscles involved in swallowing. Individuals with dysphagia may struggle with symptoms like coughing or choking during meals, the sensation of food being stuck in the throat, or frequent respiratory infections due to food or liquid entering the lungs (aspiration). These challenges can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and serious health complications if not properly managed.

Process

Through this structured approach, we aim to help individuals who stutter achieve smoother, more fluent speech, empowering them to communicate with greater ease and confidence.

1

Comprehensive Assessment

Our process begins with a thorough assessment of swallowing function, using clinical observations and, if needed, specialised tests like a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). This helps us identify the specific issues affecting the swallowing muscles.
2

Customised Treatment Plan

Based on the assessment, we create a personalised treatment plan that may include exercises to strengthen swallowing muscles, techniques to improve swallowing safety, and dietary adjustments. We also provide guidance to caregivers to support the individual’s progress at home.
3

Ongoing Monitoring & Support

We regularly monitor progress through follow-up sessions, adjusting the treatment plan as needed. Continuous support ensures swallowing safety and effectiveness, helping the individual maintain a better quality of life.
