Improving Speech Fluency

Stuttering is a speech disorder that affects the flow and rhythm of speech, making it challenging for individuals to communicate smoothly. It is often characterised by frequent pauses, repetitions of sounds, syllables, or words, and prolonged speech sounds, which can interrupt the natural flow of conversation.

Stuttering can vary in intensity, with some individuals experiencing mild disruptions, while others may struggle significantly in certain situations, such as speaking under pressure or in social settings. At Unified Speech Pathology, we understand the impact that stuttering can have on a person’s confidence and communication abilities.

Process

Through this structured approach, we aim to help individuals who stutter achieve smoother, more fluent speech, empowering them to communicate with greater ease and confidence.

1

Comprehensive Assessment

The journey to improved speech fluency begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Our speech pathologists assess the nature and severity of the stuttering, examining when and how it occurs. This evaluation may include observing the individual’s speech in different contexts, using standardised assessment tools.
2

Personalised Therapy Plan

Following the evaluation, we develop a personalised therapy plan tailored to the individual’s specific needs. This plan focuses on teaching techniques to manage stuttering, such as speech modification strategies, breathing exercises, and cognitive-behavioural approaches to reduce anxiety associated with speaking.
3

Ongoing Therapy & Evaluation

Stuttering therapy is an ongoing process that requires continuous support and practice. We conduct regular therapy sessions, either in-person or via telehealth, to reinforce the strategies learned and to monitor progress. As the individual gains confidence in their speaking abilities, we adjust the therapy plan to address new challenges and ensure sustained improvement.
