Enhanced Communication & Interaction with the World

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to various methods and tools that support or replace spoken language for individuals who have difficulty communicating verbally. AAC systems range from simple gestures, picture boards, and communication books to more advanced technologies like speech-generating devices and mobile apps. These tools are essential for individuals with conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, stroke, or other disorders that affect speech and language.

At Unified Speech Pathology, we are committed to helping individuals find the most effective AAC solutions to enhance their ability to communicate and interact with the world.

Process

Through this structured approach, we aim to help individuals regain a strong, clear, and expressive voice, enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in all aspects of life.

1

Comprehensive Assessment

The first step in implementing AAC is a thorough assessment to determine the individual’s specific communication needs and abilities. Our speech pathologists work closely with the individual, their family, and other relevant professionals to evaluate the current communication challenges and identify the most suitable AAC options. This assessment considers factors such as motor skills, cognitive abilities, and the individual’s daily communication environments.
2

Personalised AAC Plan

Based on the assessment, we develop a customized AAC plan tailored to the individual’s unique needs. This plan may involve selecting the most appropriate AAC tools, such as picture boards, communication apps, or speech-generating devices. We also provide training for the individual and their support network to ensure they can use the AAC system effectively. Our approach is collaborative, involving the individual, their family, and other caregivers in the process to ensure the AAC system integrates smoothly into daily life.

3

Ongoing Support & Adaptation

As with any communication tool, regular monitoring and support are essential to ensure the AAC system continues to meet the individual’s needs. We provide ongoing therapy sessions to help the individual become proficient with their AAC tools and to make any necessary adjustments as their communication skills evolve. We also offer support and training for family members and caregivers to help them reinforce the use of AAC in everyday interactions. Our goal is to ensure that the AAC system remains effective and responsive to the individual’s changing needs, enabling them to communicate confidently and independently.
